AP Seminar Tutoring

We guide students toward academic excellence, from start to finish.

AP Seminar is the first year of the AP Capstone program where students complete two Performance Tasks.

The Individual Research Report (IRR) is a 1,200-word individual paper that is part of Performance Task 1. In the IRR, students research one specific perspective on their team’s topic, analyze and synthesize multiple credible sources, and present their findings clearly with proper citations. This research is later used to support the team’s in-class presentation.

The Individual Written Argument (IWA) is a 2,000-word argumentative essay that is part of Performance Task 2. In the IWA, students create their own research question, take a clear position on an issue, and support it with strong evidence from credible sources. The essay must address multiple perspectives, explain the significance of the issue, and use proper citations

The Reality: Many students feel overwhelmed by these Performance Tasks. Without proper guidance, students often struggle with everything from shifting toward a more academic writing style, to determining their data source(s), to citing sources correctly.

AP Seminar isn't just another class—it requires strong academic writing and critical thinking, and may challenge even the brightest students. As PhDs with years of experience coaching students through research projects, we provide the expert guidance your student needs to excel.

FAQs

  • The earlier, the better. Ideally, students should begin receiving guidance in the late summer/early fall when they're forming their research questions. However, we can help at any stage of the process through the final submission and presentation.

  • Unlike other AP classes that follow a set curriculum, AP Research is entirely student-driven. Students choose their own topic, conduct original research, and must defend their findings which is much like a college thesis.

  • We provide extensive practice sessions, help students anticipate potential questions, and coach them on presentation techniques to ensure they feel confident during their defense.

  • It's never too late to get help. We can assess where they are in the process and create an intensive support plan to get them back on track. We typically begin with a review of the work they have completed to date in order to hit the ground running mid-process.
